Why we've chosen Passenger 'Let her go'.

Why we’ve chosen Passenger ‘Let her go’.

We’ve decided to choose passenger let her go as our song because its current music video isn’t very extravagant nor does it have a narrative even though the song is very well known. By choosing a song that is well know we know that people would want to watch our video to see how we have interpreted the piece. In addition to this the song itself is very self-explanatory when it comes to the lyrics it has (ie ‘staring at the ceiling in the dark’) therefore making the piece easier to film seeming as many music videos from the pop section have they’re video correlate with the lyrics of the song. An example of this is in Ed Sheeran ‘Give me love’ when is states ‘I just wanna hold ya’ then shows two art manikins holding each other.
Another reason why we've chosen to use this Passenger song is because it would be more realistic and cost-effective to do a song like this then a big rap song which would involve alot of cars and money. By chosing this song we have also chosen its sense of style which is very simplistic and easy to portray.

Narrative and Reasons

Narrative

The first scene starts before the music starts there will be a small scene between Tyrell and Anna. Rain will be pouring down; Anna will come running out of a house into the rain soon followed by the Tyrell. He will grab her arm and pull her back so that she’s facing him, as they stare into each other’s eyes he will say “I’m sorry” while stroking her cheek. She pushes his hand away and looks up at him with hard eyes saying “sorry doesn’t cut it.” She walks away from him as his left in in the rain watching her run away.

The chorus is in the Black Room (also known as the school theatre) and you can’t see the main character well but as the song continues the stage is alight with two spotlights on Tyrell – one from the right and one from the left. He’s wearing simple clothes such as a plain t-shirt and jeans. The only other things in the scene with him are his guitar and the black sofa he sits on.

In the instrumental bit between the video there would be short shots of violence such as the Him character kicking, slapping and pushing Anna as well as some more attractive piece of him pushing her up against the wall and him punching the wall next to her face as he places his face right in front of hers.

The first verse is mainly about how they’ve met. Seeming as people in our target audience live life on the more simplistic, clique side we’re going to have the two meet in the park when she’s walking while reading and bumping into him, then flashing forward to them eating in a little diner having milkshakes.

The second chorus is much like the first except it has a bit more movement in it as if Tyrell is putting more emotion into it this time.

The next verse starts with him looking really sad into the bottom of his glass – as quoted by the piece itself – but moves onto a flashback of both Tyrell and Anna looking happy in his room but soon turns bleak when he slaps her and she walks out.

The chorus after that scene is all about movement and the emotion behind the words. For this we have the him characters playing the guitar and singing along to the song while playing with pure passion. He’ll be moving around the sofa but still in the black room. This continues all through the middle eight.

When the first half of the final chorus arises the Tyrell is playing the guitar with an air of finality around him, as if his realised he can’t make the situation better. The second half is a repeat of the end of the first scene.

Reasons…

We’ve decided to have our piece to follow Todorov’s Theory of Narrative. Our state of equilibrium starts at verse one where you see how they were all happy and cute shown simply by how they meet and him taking her to the dinner.

The disequilibrium happens during the instrumental where you see Tyrell physically abusing Anna. This is a downer on the whole ‘perfect’ image they had a few seconds before that.

The second verse as well as the second chorus is to let people recognises something is wrong. The second verse does this by showing the difference between perfect and the truth whereas the chorus does this by showing the audience that Tyrell feeling upset about this, shown through his movement and his emotion while singing.

Tyrell attempts to fix all of this at the end when he runs out in the rain after her to say his sorry but Anna doesn’t think his apology is enough to ensure her safety so she leaves, leaving the new equilibrium as her being without him.

Her Character Profile

Character Profile: Her.

Name: Anna Vansavil.

Age: Sixteen

Favorite Colour: Sunset Orange

Any Other Info: Anna comes from a ‘normal’ family with a mum, dad, older brother and herself. She’s very shy and quiet. Many people would classify her as a geek. She wears basic clothes such as jeans and plain t-shirts simply because her family cannot afford to by her any designer clothes she doesn't mind. She’s a very simplistic person who doesn't feel as if she needs anything materialistic in her life. You’re more likely to see Anna with her head in a book then her out at a party.

Anna is the ‘play it safe’ kind of girl. The type of girl who is focusing on her studies, staying away from alcohol and is, all round seen, as little miss perfect. I guess you could say that Anna is your typical geek from all those story books – the type of girl who kind of blends into the background but doesn't even try to fight for the spotlight.

By keeping her character like this it would help her relate to our target audience. We are aiming this music video to girls just like Anna – shy, simplistic and smart.

We've chosen Rawan to play Anna seeming as Rawan feels as if she can put a lot of emotion into the piece and make it feel more realistic and heart felt.

MOOD BOARD

This mood board should give you an little understanding about the characters in our music video

All Round Mood Board.

Male character profile

Name: Tyrell

Age: 16.
Favourite colour: hazel
We chose the name Tyrell Loras for the character because Huseen is playing the character, as he's black it would suit the character more than Tom for example. Tyrell is a very simplistic person; he enjoys the smaller things in life. He was born as an only child; being an only child has helped him be independent and have many friends as he didn’t have any brothers/sister to play with. Tyrell is not the most popular person amongst his friends and he has a neutral status. He is very smart education wise: after get all A's and one B in his gcse he is now at collegue studying his passsions: BTECH Sport, English literature, socialogy and politics.

His dad left his mum when he was really young; he remembers his dad fighting with his mum all the shouting and his mum crying from getting beaten by his dad. His relationship with his mum is really good as she has always taken care of him due to the fact that he's the only child. Also he's the only family member she has ever had as she was adopted by her step parents, who died in a car crash. Tyrell likes to read a lot of books and his favourite genres are romance and adventure.

Locations for music video

our music video will be recored in a variety settings, there will be fotage in regents park showing the couple in the story bumping into eachother in their favourite park, there will also be fotage in tinsle town diner to record the couple of our story having their first date, there will also be fotage indoors to record the couple hanging around in one of their rooms then having an argument also there will be some dimestic violence recorded indoors. there will be fotage in regent high school theatre to record the male character playing his guitar and singing the theatre would be a good location for this fotage because we have advantage of controling spot lights and diffrent lighting in the theatre to make our music video more amazing.
also at the beginning of the music video there will be footage of the couple in the rain infront of a house

Miley Cyrus Wrecking ball Analysis video

The song I have chosen to analyse is Miley Cyrus- Wreck ball. We can denote the song starts with a moment of silence just the music playing slowly, with Miley Cyrus crying and red lipstick with a close up shot of her face and her direct mode of address is right towards the audience, with a white background. From the crying I can connote that there is something wrong with Miley maybe she’s the victim of a situation due to the fact the background is white; white is stereotypically connoted with the sense of Innocent, pure and angelic, therefore the audience will get the presumption of Miley Cyrus being a victim and will sympathize for her. Also I could connote that Miley Cyrus is going through a break-up or a hard relationship because of the color of her lipstick, red. Red is stereotypically associated with love, romance, danger, therefore I can connote that Miley could have just broken up from a relationship and she’s really upset as she’s crying, So this makes the audience sympathize and curious to find out more about what happened therefore being more interested in Miley Cyrus's song. From the mode of address and close up shot we I connote that the director wanted the audience to concentrate on Miley's crying and her facial expression and be curious, being curious engages the audience to think what has happened to Miley so the audience will listen to her words more carefully and will have a sense of sadness which the direct purposely want the audience to feel, as the song is a sad; it also engages the audience it makes them feel like Miley is telling them her story and wants sympathy. A few seconds of silent before Miley stars singing creates a lot of tension because it’s just Miley crying with close up shot therefore the audience is more willing to unfold why that is; furthermore it’s a difference to the Miley the audience knows and sees on media e.g. T.V because of the recent footage of VMA where Miley 'twerks' etc., she comes across as a wild, crazy and fun person however this is a contrast and it hits the audience so they will be more engaging and the tension will build as to why she is upset.

This is a contrast to the previous shot. The music has gone loud and fast, it’s a long shot with Miley holding a hammer and a boulder breaking a wall which it smashing into pieces furthermore the background has changed from white to dark, also Miley is very revealing wearing a short white top and white nickers and her facial expression very blank. We can connote from her being very revealing that she is trying to get male audience to watch her videos; normally its girls who listens to Miley Cyrus's songs because of her role in a Disney show, which was targeted for girls, however being very revealing she is attracting a wider audiences with males. Also Miley Cyrus is trying to change her media image from a Disney star to a mature singer therefore we can connote that by being very revealing she is giving of the idea that she is more mature and wants more mature audience. As well as that we can connote the target audience for the song which is 16-25. Firstly we can connote from her clothing that it’s for a more older audience then her usual Disney fans; secondly the topic of the song is about relationship, breaking up and how it feels and 16 to 25 years old are usually in those situation and will feel the same as Miley Cyrus as she is the same age range as them, so the audience empathize and sympathize for her. From the color of her clothing, white, we can connote that she is innocent as the color white is stereotypically associate with innocence and helplessness. However from the contrast of her holding a hammer in her hand we can cannot that she is willing to fight her way through this heart-break and that although she might weak and precious she is still a fighter. This makes the audience who are in a similar situation more motivated and courage’s that they can do the same. As well as that we can cannot that she might be telling her Disney fans that she is no longer innocent that she is crazier with a strong character and a sense of wildness, contrast to her previous personality. From the denotation of the bulldozer breaking the brick wall we can cannot Miley Cyrus has had enough and she is breaking the barriers/problems that is standing in front of her, even if she has to use violence. In addition to that we can cannot from the dark background that Miley Cyrus was going through a very hard dark times because black is usually associate with problems, evil, bad times. However she is coming towards the lighter part of the scene therefore we can cannot that she is getting rid of the bad, dark times and is breaking the barriers to happy and freedom.

N-dubz - Say it's over Video analysis

The music video of N-dubz – say it’s over is about the three band members finding it hard to end the relationships that they’re in.The lyrics are related to the song. Also that the one breaking up with the other is trying really hard not to hurt the other couple, for example in one shot Fazer's girlfriend gets a flower.

In the music video Dappy is dressed in a white coat and white trousers with a black hat and in another shot he's wearing a grey army coat, black top, white futuristic trousers, white hat and black glasses.; Tulisa wears a white futuristic top also with a white futuristic trousers and in another shot she is wearing a dominantly white dress with black lines going down, her make-up is not really heavy beside one shot that her eye make is really heavy with white; Fazer wears a white jacket and a futuristic white trousers also in a different shot he wears a full grey jogging suit. As the background of the song is usually white or black these outfits make them stand out as they're a contrast to the scene. Also it could cannote that the white and black represent their struggles, that they have grown so apart Dappy/Fazer/Tulisa are in the white and that the girl/boyfriend are in the black that’s how far apart they have grown. Furthermore Tulisa is not wearing an outfit that is very revealing we can cannot that the video is trying to make you focus on the lyrics and what’s happening to the video more than the singers looks.

The genre of the song is Hip-Hop and RnB, it fits really well with this song because hip-hop music is a music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly involves rapping which two of the band members, Dappy and Fazer, do; also it’s a RnB music because it has an insistent beat to it. I would say the music video is based on futuristic time however it doesn’t go crazy with aliens etc. although there are three separate short stories they're all connected. The song touches with the audience as everyone goes through love and break up at least once in their life’s and this song although being futuristic it still shows the reality that people go though in a break up.

In the music video there are lots of cuts to show the different stories, given the chance for the band members to have their solo and all together also the chance to show their different outfits. The lighting in the music video is dominantly bright. There is a solo motion when the heart is broken i think this is to empathises on the fact it’s a dramatic thing. The music zooms in to the band members or the actors to show their emotions, for example when tulisa says 'baby its killing me' it’s a close up shot we can see she’s really upset therefore it helps to emphasis on the lyrics. There are jump cuts from one story to the other and one band member to the other; this is to show the different stories of the music video but also the band dancing and singing. As hip-hop and RnB genre involves a bit of dancing the jumping cuts helps to show this for example the shot jumps to Tulisa dancing. Jumping cuts makes the video more interesting because it makes the audience constantly seeing differently things, keeping their focus however if it was one long shot it would bore the audience. There are long shots to give a full view of the situation and the scene and the props in the shots.

The sets in the music video are dominantly in a white and black background with not much in the scene beside a car. I can cannot that they're trying to hold the audiences focus on the singers and the narrative instead of the background therefore they have made it plain white and black. Furthermore i could also cannot that the background colour, white and black, can represent the situation metaphorically, that the people in the relationship are really different as the colour white and black are.

In conclusion the music video is about three relationships going downhill, where one partner doesn’t want to be with the other however finds it really hard to say it's over. We can cannote that this video is targeted towards young people, teenagers to young adults (15-25) because the outfits are really related to the young people’s culture also the video. The video will help to sell the song because it has been put really well together, nice stories, really well dressed and something different and new which goes well with the lyrics. Although it's a song about love and breaking up they haven’t made it all gloomy and sad as it contains a nice beat and good lyrics therefore it will attract a wider target audience beside the people who have gone through break ups.

This video is really helpful for us because we can take some ideas from it. For example the close up shots that shows facial expression is really helpful for us because we have a simliar situation and we can use that to show emotion. This is will help us because we want to show emotion as it engages the audience. Furthur more there is drama in the video this entertains the audience and engages them because everyone loves a bit of drama. We might put some drama in our one to engage the audience becauase music video are spose to be engaging and entertaining.

Music Video Analsis- Huseen

Jessie J- Wild

The music video didn’t really have a narrative but it had the singers in the video throughout. This was quite effective because it kept the audience engaged as they were watching what were likely to be their favourite singer.

The song takes quite long to start and in that time Jessie J is walking down taking her top off. This made me think that the target audience ranged from 16-25 rather than for young teenagers. This was because the way Jessie J wasn’t wearing much so it made me think that the target audience wasn’t suitable for young kids. Because it was Jessie j walking down, it kept the audience engaged with the music video whereas if it was a random actor chosen by the director, then the audience wouldn’t want to watch the video as they will think the music video doesn't appeal to them.

The video was mainly black and white and had nearly no colour at all. For example in this particular shot it there isn’t any colour which made the audience curious compared to if it was in colour focus on jessie j. This made the outcome of the video very successful as it created a buzzing and energetic atmosphere to keep the audience engaged with the piece and enjoy it. This was because people think off black/white as boring and not very lively therefore Jessie j dancing gave a contrast and made the video very interesting and 'wild'. Also as the target audience are young people it will appeal to them a lot because the dancing culture is really popular at the moment.

The lighting in the video is very important and makes the audience think and feel differently. There is a bright light shining on Jessie J which makes the audience think that she is very important and has a high status; it makes the audience focus on her as the lighting is very bright on her. furthermore the colours in the background are all white therefore making her shine brighter than the background make her stand out; this is so the audience can get engaged into her dancing. This connotes that the director has done this to be unique compared to other music video, also to stand out. Also the way that the director staged it and the props/costumes used in the video were suitable. Jessie J is really reveilling in this video, stereotypically men are attracted to naked/reveilling women, therefore it will attract a broader target audience.

In this shot I can denote that it goes from Jessie J dancing energertically to B.I.G Sean who changes the loud buzzing atmosphere to a more relaxed atmosphere but still keeps a bit of the energy. The director has done this because he wants the audience to feel differently and see the difference
between the two artists, as jessie J is singing  whereas B.I.G Sean raps fast; the tune and beat changes as well which prevents the audience from getting bored from the same beat. So he changes musicians so that people who don't really enjoy Jessie J’s type of music can get a different style. Also, people who are a fan of B.I.G Sean or Dizzie Rascal will want to watch the music videos as it has their favourite musician in the video. The director has chosen to do this because the people that watched the video will tell their friends/family about it which will help the video get more views.

Overall, I think that the music video was constructed very well by the director. The way he made the artists enter, and the range of movements, the upbeat music all contributed to the success of the video. These made the video very intriguing and kept the audience curious and want to find out what’s going to happen as the video progresses.

Analysis of Ed Sheeran ‘Give Me Love’ music video.

Analysis of Ed Sheeran ‘Give Me Love’ music video.

Like many Ed Sheeran music video’s ‘Give Me Love’ is a narrative about a young girls life, starting at the end and circling round showing you her full story of her life without having any bands performing during it.
The song is about a girl who turns into a Cupid and is helping others to find love by shooting her arrows at people she sees on the street. This helps to entertain Ed’s target audience as many 15-25 year olds are interested in mythical creatures such as Cupid, Vampires and Werewolves. Having the girl find out she’s cupid at the begging of the video helps the audience to sympathies with her as she feels like she doesn’t fit in and has to do what is expected of her, just like a lot of the target audience feel. Ed Sheeran didn’t write this song for a specific gender as both male and female’s between the ages of 15-25 will empathies with main character in this video.

The music video begins with the main character found dead in her flat with an arrow in her neck, letting the audience establish that she was either murdered or committed suicide. Having the narrative of the piece start from the end bring the circular motion effect of the end during the beginning. This will make the audience feel interested in the piece and continue watching because they want all of their questions answered. They want to know why she has an arrow through her neck and why she has wings. Having all of these questions shown at the end makes people watch the video to have a clear understanding as to how they got there.
During the video Ed Sheeran has the images portray the words he sings. An example of this is when he sings “I just wanna hold ya”. Subsequent to this the image (right) is shown. This is really effective as it Ed Sheeran sings and simultaeneously portrays he’s words through images like this one on the right. The audience can emphasise with this as they themselves would feel lonley at some point in time.

Ed Sheeran bases part of his music video in a dark and dingy flat as it represents what most of the target audience feels. Most people in the age range (15-25 year olds) feel alone and isolated therefore emphasising with what the main character of the narative is feeling. This is shown from the lighting used in the video. The main light source is coming from the lamp, the midground, drawing peoples attention to the middle of the sence and connoting that is little hope in dark times; needless to say there is always a white bright light at the end of each tunnel. In addition to this, the background has a street lamp in it to let the audience subconsiously denote that this song is based in a city. Also the light in the foreground shown by the misty smoke is used to give of a magical feel that is explained later on in the video. A more basic reason they had used white light to shine in the scene is simple because white light refect better off of white fabric – highlighting the main character of the scene.
Ed sheeran uses mainly dark colours in his piece to enphasise the bad times as that is what his song is about. The fact that he seems to use this throughout the piece – minus the end and the shooting arrows – is to show the audience that negativitey is all around them, which is what most of the audience already thinks.

The protaganist of the piece is wearing mainly white to symbolise purity and innocence. This is because Ed Sheeran wants to show the audience that all pure things in life are tainted by badness therefore not as they seem. This would alow them to once again emphasise with the audience as most of the audience would feel as it they are the angle and they are the ones being tainted by society.

All in all there are a lot of things Ed Sheerans video reprents – society’s point of view, innocence and lonleyness – each show in there own indevidual way. All of which could be borrowed and used again in a different video by someone else, for something else.

Music Video Analysis

Naughty boy-La La La

This music video has a narrative throughout the video and rarely is the artist in the video. The narrative is told in a chronological order that makes it easier for the audience to understand what is happening in the music video. The story is told from the boy’s perspective and what he does as he goes through a troubled day.

Towards the start of the video the audience feel sympathy for the boy as he is being shouted at by what we think is his father/uncle and then leaves his house because he can’t cope with it anymore. The director has chosen to do this because he wants to show the audience that when you’re under pressure the best thing to do is to walk away. Also, there might be a lot of people experiencing this in real life  The boy walks away and the chorus ‘la la la’ comes on. This is very effective because when the boy is being shouted at aggressively he doesn’t have to listen to it but holds his ears and walks away.

As the boy carries on his journey and picks up other people that are not enjoying the situation that they are in. For example when there is an old man playing the stereo for 3 females and the little boy comes and tells him to hold his ears and the chorus ‘la la la’ comes on again. This is a very significant part in the video as the director is trying to make a point that you don't have to be in a situation/work place that you don't like. You can simply walk away.

The narrative gives the audience something for the audience to focus in and follow. However, if there was just an artist then the audience might get bored and not want to watch the video even if the song is good.

In this shot the boy is holding his ears while the chorus 'la la la' is playing. This is effective because it shows that there is always an alternative if you're in a bad situation. Also, many people will see this and will start doing it which will promote the video even more. For example the song Gangnam Style by Psy; many people viewed the video and the director of this probably wanted to get the same outcome. This is effective because it gives the audience something different to view rather than just watching the artist singing in the video. On the other hand, it's better to have a narrative as well as having the artist in the video because the audience would want to see their favourite artist in the song which is why they listen to the song in the first place.

The director keeps the boy repeating the chorus 'la la la' to emphasise the fact that people don't need to listen to what others are saying. The repetition connotes to the reader that that is an important

Overall I think the music video had a very good narrative and contributed to the success of the music video. This was because it gave the audience something else to think about rather than just listen to the music but have something else to watch and be entertained by it. This made the video more entertaining to watch.
