The song I have chosen to analyse is Miley Cyrus- Wreck ball. We can denote the song starts with a moment of silence just the
music playing slowly, with Miley Cyrus crying and red lipstick with a close up
shot of her face and her direct mode of address is right towards the audience, with a
white background. From the crying I can connote that there is something wrong
with Miley maybe she’s the victim of a situation due to the fact the background
is white; white is stereotypically connoted with the sense of Innocent, pure and angelic, therefore the audience will get the presumption of Miley
Cyrus being a victim and will sympathize for her. Also I could connote that Miley
Cyrus is going through a break-up or a hard relationship because of the color
of her lipstick, red. Red is stereotypically associated with love, romance, danger, therefore
I can connote that Miley could have just broken up from a relationship and she’s
really upset as she’s crying, So this makes the audience sympathize and curious
to find out more about what happened therefore being more interested in Miley Cyrus's song. From the
mode of address and close up shot we I connote that the director wanted the audience to concentrate on Miley's crying and her
facial expression and be curious, being curious engages the audience to think
what has happened to Miley so the audience will listen to her words more
carefully and will have a sense of sadness which the direct purposely want the
audience to feel, as the song is a sad; it also engages the audience it makes
them feel like Miley is telling them her story and wants sympathy. A few
seconds of silent before Miley stars singing creates a lot of tension because it’s
just Miley crying with close up shot therefore the audience is more willing to
unfold why that is; furthermore
it’s a difference to the Miley the audience knows and sees on
media e.g. T.V because of the recent footage of VMA where Miley 'twerks' etc.,
she comes across as a wild, crazy and fun person however this is a contrast and
it hits the audience so they will be more engaging and the tension will build
as to why she is upset.
This is a contrast to the previous shot.
The music has gone loud and fast, it’s a long shot with Miley holding a hammer
and a boulder breaking a wall which it smashing into pieces furthermore the
background has changed from white to dark, also Miley is very revealing wearing a
short white top and white nickers and her facial expression very blank. We can connote from her being
very revealing that she is trying to get male audience to watch her videos;
normally its girls who listens to Miley Cyrus's songs because of her role in a Disney
show, which was targeted for girls, however being very revealing she is
attracting a wider audiences with males. Also Miley Cyrus is trying to change
her media image from a Disney star to a mature singer therefore we can connote that by being
very revealing she is giving of the idea that she is more mature and wants more
mature audience. As well as that we can connote the target audience for the song which
is 16-25. Firstly we can connote from her clothing that it’s for a more older audience then her
usual Disney fans; secondly the topic of the song is about relationship,
breaking up and how it feels and 16 to 25 years old are usually in those
situation and will feel the same as Miley Cyrus as she is the same age range as
them, so the audience empathize and sympathize for her. From the color of her clothing, white, we can connote that she is innocent as the color
white is stereotypically associate with innocence and
helplessness. However from the contrast of her holding a hammer in her hand we
can cannot that she is willing to fight her way through this heart-break and
that although she might weak and precious she is still a fighter. This makes
the audience who are in a similar situation more motivated and courage’s that they can
do the same. As well as that we can cannot that she might be telling her Disney
fans that she is no longer innocent that she is crazier with a strong character
and a sense of wildness, contrast to her previous personality. From the
denotation of the bulldozer breaking the brick wall we can cannot Miley Cyrus
has had enough and she is breaking the barriers/problems that is standing in
front of her, even if she has to use violence. In addition to that we can cannot
from the dark background that Miley Cyrus was going through a very hard dark
times because black is usually associate with problems, evil, bad times.
However she is coming towards the lighter part of the scene therefore we can cannot
that she is getting rid of the bad, dark times and is breaking the barriers to
happy and freedom.
