Music Video Analysis

Naughty boy-La La La

This music video has a narrative throughout the video and rarely is the artist in the video. The narrative is told in a chronological order that makes it easier for the audience to understand what is happening in the music video. The story is told from the boy’s perspective and what he does as he goes through a troubled day.

Towards the start of the video the audience feel sympathy for the boy as he is being shouted at by what we think is his father/uncle and then leaves his house because he can’t cope with it anymore. The director has chosen to do this because he wants to show the audience that when you’re under pressure the best thing to do is to walk away. Also, there might be a lot of people experiencing this in real life  The boy walks away and the chorus ‘la la la’ comes on. This is very effective because when the boy is being shouted at aggressively he doesn’t have to listen to it but holds his ears and walks away.

As the boy carries on his journey and picks up other people that are not enjoying the situation that they are in. For example when there is an old man playing the stereo for 3 females and the little boy comes and tells him to hold his ears and the chorus ‘la la la’ comes on again. This is a very significant part in the video as the director is trying to make a point that you don't have to be in a situation/work place that you don't like. You can simply walk away.

The narrative gives the audience something for the audience to focus in and follow. However, if there was just an artist then the audience might get bored and not want to watch the video even if the song is good.

In this shot the boy is holding his ears while the chorus 'la la la' is playing. This is effective because it shows that there is always an alternative if you're in a bad situation. Also, many people will see this and will start doing it which will promote the video even more. For example the song Gangnam Style by Psy; many people viewed the video and the director of this probably wanted to get the same outcome. This is effective because it gives the audience something different to view rather than just watching the artist singing in the video. On the other hand, it's better to have a narrative as well as having the artist in the video because the audience would want to see their favourite artist in the song which is why they listen to the song in the first place.

The director keeps the boy repeating the chorus 'la la la' to emphasise the fact that people don't need to listen to what others are saying. The repetition connotes to the reader that that is an important

Overall I think the music video had a very good narrative and contributed to the success of the music video. This was because it gave the audience something else to think about rather than just listen to the music but have something else to watch and be entertained by it. This made the video more entertaining to watch.
